My tutor discussed many of my strengths and weakness throughout my time on this course. She said my specialist portfolio was well constructed and demonstrated my high creative ability throughout. Considering Textiles being a brand new area for me, I should feel very proud considering I have learnt all these techniques and methods within a short time frame. Textiles is something I have never fully explored and feel a lot more confident now attending this course and having the support of peers and lecturers. My mature and thoughtful decision to study was very good, she believes a course which explores a lot of illustrative methods would suit me better than most abstract courses. This will benefit me in. I have adhered to deadlines with ease throughout this programme showing great organisational skills. My tutor also stated my specialist portfolio was very well presented and reflected my time and effort I put into my work.

To improve further I was advised to understand the idea of final outcomes in textiles, including final samples, visualisations ad products. This will help me develop my final ideas towards a final sample. I must expand my research further as well as make sure my annotation is consistent throughout my sketchbook. Also reinforcing my work with reasoning’s and explanations why I have selected certain images within my research. I was also informed I am currently working at Merit level however I have a lot of Distinction potential.

With receiving this feedback I need to defiantly improve on my final outcomes and as well as make my realisations more visible to the audience. I need to document my thinking more often and evaluate my thoughts during the different paths I head towards. I never document my failures and how I have worked from this, this is something i will do for my FMP.

I presented all three concepts ideas to my tutor and was given positive feedback. My tutor liked all three proposals however believed an illustrative and drawing based theme would suit me better, exploring traditional printmaking. I agreed with my tutor, this was something which suited my style a lot more. Due to this I headed more towards my third idea of “Woodland/Forest/Human”, this idea was very different however both me and my tutor weren’t quite sure it would suite my intended outcomes of interior, maybe gift wrap? This is something I must research further into and think realistically. Overall we both thought this idea’s great and suited my skills very well. I felt very passionate and excited about this theme and already had a plan of the way I wanted to take it. At first my tutor narrowed my theme down to forest/woodland, with this I could focus more to one element and the woods was my favourite place.

Overall I am very pleased with my tutorial and have been given a great deal of advice and positive feedback. This tutorial has helped me understand my positives and draw backs and how to improve these, increasing my overall grade. I understood my tutor’s feedback and talked about how I felt throughout my course with ease.  I was given other sources to help me begin my FMP off; this was very helpful and has defiantly helped me understand my theme more and the different paths available.

Reflection

I have achieved new abilities, learning new methods and techniques including knitting. This was something I never quite understood and failed again and again trying. However during my time in specialism I gave it another go, and with the help of peers and tutors I was able to learn this technique. I applied this affectively into my work creating beautiful samples which i then displayed on my final A2 boards. In my spare time i taught myself the pearl stitch which suited me very well, I am very pleased with this improvement and think of it as an achievement. I have also learnt knew ways of working including screen printing, dye, stencilling, quilting, weaving, French knots and much more. This course has significantly improved my skills and knowledge of the different specialisms/careers out there.

Throughout this foundation course I have developed my skills, gaining several including organisational skills, communication, presentation, research, drawing, development and evaluative.  These skills have been developed at different parts to this course and helped me progress my work and approach of thinking. At first I lacked presentational skills and struggled to communicate my thoughts and ideas to other colleges, however during my time on this course i have developed these skills and now able to communicate well under pressure and present a clear ad well-structured presentation. My confidence has improved and I feel more unrestricted to take my work in any direction I wish. Before attending this course I never had the mind set for interior and textiles however now my mind is more flexible and I have an eye for interior and textile pieces. I have learnt a lot of the terms used in both aspects and can apply them in to my work.

Throughout rotation I struggled to plan my work into a final piece, instead I jumped straight into the construction part. This was something my lecturers noticed quickly and have been working with me to grow out of this habit. This has defiantly affected my work in specialism and my final outcomes. On the other hand my main strength is the initial drawing aspect and research. I enjoy drawing and gathering a wide range of inspirational imagery as well as taking forward others methods and styles/ways of working. Sometimes I find myself behind a thinking wall; I have spoken to my tutor about this problem and have discussed different ways of working around it. This has impacted a lot of my work and limited me to explore most of my potential. Through time this has improved with the help of peers and lecturers. For my FMP this issue will be easier to manage as my tutor is aware and has kindly advised me to ask for support if I feel like this.

To improve my work I must development my organisation skills even further, becoming stricter with my time management and weekly tasks. Once I have improved this area then my time plan will be more accurate to follow and will be able to meet important deadlines. I would like to work on my final stages of development, accurately showing my thinking processes and reasoning’s why I chose certain elements. Making it more clearly for an audience to follow and understand.I would also like to development my presentation with in my sketchbooks.  Find my previous books very confusing and lacked elements to obtain an audiences interest. I have already spoken to my tutor and asked how I could improve my initial drawings and structuring them within my sketchbook affectively and have already been given great feedback on improving this area. Finally I’d like to improve my blog, making the structure more professional/clear/categorise suiting my genre, also organising my time more efficiently to type up my evaluations correctly without any grammar mistakes.

Project Concept

My aim for my FMP is to explore the theme “Woodland/Forests” and explore the texture, colours, landscapes and living things creating a large body of initial drawings throughout this project. I hope to associate this theme into an interior setting, producing interior papers and fabrics and surfaces. I would like to explore both print and constructed textiles creating a very illustrative and textual collection. I would like my work to portray the different elements found in the woodland/forests and perhaps explore different tales linked to this environment. I would also as part of the theme like to explore human interaction in nature specific in the woodland/forest.

To ensure the development of my project I intend to observe/study body language, drawing from it daily as well as creating my own photography. I will also create initial drawings from woodland/forest to create motifs which I can then manipulate and work with. I also intend to use a wide range of materials to visually record body language and the woods. This will help form a large body of work and extensive project. I will visit places such as the Hancock, Kielder observatory and I may even organise a life drawing class to collect visual imagery. To understand the human figure more I hope to publically observe peoples body language and body shape. This will be visually captured in my side journal which I will use just for observational research. This will form the basis of my primary research. For my secondary research I intend to use Pinterest as well as gather different artists whom can bring something different to my work such as style, methods, materials and much more.

I foresee this theme finalising into an interior collection however I may also consider a gift and wrap final collection too due to my unusual theme. I aim to create a large amount of swatches both paper and fabric. Instead of forwarding my work into a commercial purpose I intend to push my work towards a more creative and unusual market.

Evaluation

The main reflection of my work will come in a variety of forms including weekly blogs. This evaluative technique will help me write my week self- reflection tasks which I could then go backed think analytically about all aspects of completed work so far. This will be used throughout my project, I hope to write daily on my blog as this will give me evaluative information when finalising the course. I believe the most effective method to reflect upon my work will be through peer reviews and discussions, with this i could gather ideas and opinions from an outsiders view, this is something i find important. This is because I am able to communicate with peers on how to improve my work and understand their different perspectives. I may also evaluate my work through tutor critiques on a regular basis. Having this one to one feedback is very useful and talk about the problems i may encounter and how my project has developed. Having this frequent contact will be important and benefit me, ensuring I am working at a high enough standard and quantity. Along-side this will may complete a daily/weekly journal, reviewing my progression of my work and if I am meeting my targets set out on my strict time plan.  I also intend to evaluate my progression using the SWOT method, this will ensure I am analysing my work critically.

Woodland/Forest/ human interactivity

Brief Outline

My theme is based on the woodland/forest environment. This will be based closely to the Garden of Earthly Delights which I have already approached however I would also as part of the theme like to explore human interaction in nature specifically the woodland/forest. I hope to create small illustrative stories of these two themes interacting together; this idea will be developed further into my FMP. This theme would provide a wide selection of initial drawings and range of facilities to gather research from such as museums, art galleries and national gardens/parks. I intend to create interior products such as wallpaper, chairs, lamp shades, cushions and more working well along-side my theme. I intend to collect my main visual inspiration from Pinterest, gathering different motif styles and ways of working, which i intend to take further into my FMP. I would like to focus on woodland/forest creatures such as foxes, owls, deer’s and much more… I plan to begin my initial research of with woodland/forest imagery, then bringing in the human form interacting both of these themes together. Illustrative pieces such as trees have been a main source of my inspiration. I intend to draw from different types of forest/woodlands from around the world.

Nature

Brief outline

My project will be based around the theme of “Nature”, portraying the different elements around us in a range of styles, motifs and mediums through an innovative interior setting. I intend to explore the different textures and colours created by nature and perhaps explore the science behind nature and growth. This project will look at many key points and attempt to build them all into a collection of interior papers, surfaces and fabrics. I wish to explore both print and constructed textiles throughout this theme, creating a very experimental and textural collection. For my project to move forward continuously I intend to study nature drawing from it daily and developing new motifs. I will also visually record natures using different materials; this will also help me generate new ideas and motifs. This will provide a visually rich extensive project. For my primary research I will use photography and drawing work. For my secondary research I intend to source imagery from the internet including Pinterest, from here I will gather new techniques and styles other artists use. This research will influence my work greatly and help me generate a range of processes.

Seaside

Brief outline

For this project I will explore the landmark of the seaside, researching different types of beaches around the world. I would particularly like to focus on the movement of waves and colours created. I would attempt to re-create these waves using a range of mediums/styles/processes for my collection of interior fabrics and paper designs. I want my prints to portray the different textures, colours and shapes found at the seaside. To have my project constantly development I hope to create a huge body of initial drawings to use in my development stages of my collection.

My photography will be my strong aspect of research and allow me to create initial drawings from my imagery. As well as this I will use other recording materials. For my secondary research I will use Pinterest gathering artist research and different inspirational imagery to direct my project further.

Personal Statement

Art can be a never ending journey which you won’t know what you will find and experience along the way. Art has been a strong interest of mine. During the past years I have experienced new methods and styles within the art sector. My time in education has improved my own style and opinion, exposing me to a range of medium and artists. The world today is heavily influenced by art. Contributing to the world and pushing my artwork and thoughts out there would be amazing. Personally I find it difficult to stick to one topic as I enjoy all aspects to art, such as illustration, architecture, fashion, interior designing and many more. Although I have not passed my GCSE English I am still determined to achieve anything. Failing this subject doesn’t hold me back but pushes me to do better and motivate myself to achieve my best. At the moment I am taking classes to enhance my English to achieve the grade I want. Art gives me the key to escape reality and opens doors. It seems only natural to choose a degree which I feel passionate about and love. Being placed into a professional environment with other artists and teachers along the journey is something I find important. This would benefit me by providing a wider view of the different styles and the individualities of others. Moving into sixth form has given me many new and important skills. Such as problem solving and creative thinking, thinking outside the box is great for art when you are struggling to take it a step further. With two of my A Levels being ICT I have had a lot of different understanding of the different programmes out there. This subject would support my Art as I can use technical programming to experiment with different mediums and methods when creating my own artwork. Throughout education I have kept a very high attendance, it is very important to have a punctual attendance as this can have a huge impact on your results. This is something I find vital to have. I have taken part in the Air Training Corps for a year which developed many achievements such as Best Female Cadet. I believe this is where I have improved and learnt many of my skills such as disciplinary, teamwork, problem solving, and communication. I joined cadets because I wanted to improve my confidence and make myself into a more mature adult. During my free time I love to catch up reading my books. This is a strong hobby of mine which is also used to help me with my English. I love to visit different art museums and exhibitions displaying a wide range of different concepts and scales of artwork. Exhibitions are a very testing activity and in my eyes this is something an artist should be extremely proud off.

Learning new things and experiences is always something I target for. I find it impossible to set myself on one path. I see myself doing everything in the future such as teaching, interior designer, magazine illustrator, architect, artist and more. I have been providing requested artwork, this is something I enjoy and can do in my spare time.

GOED 2 Evaluation

The brief stated this project is to explore and extend the theme of garden of earthly delights in greater detail, focusing on imagery which can be translated three dimensionally. To visual communicate your theme of designs onto fabric. I will participate in a number of workshops which i will develop different learning techniques such as weaving, applique, paper manipulation and more. My initial thoughts of this brief were negative as I had very little experience with these techniques however I was very pleased to learn them and apply them into my own work.

To begin my research I explored different fabric manipulations and techniques such as French knots, I discovered a range of methods and beautiful styles which I could apply to my work. Pinterest provided me amazing detailed fabric designs which were very inspirational. I did not focus on one designer however viewed a large range of different artists and styles. In my personal time I learned how to knit, learning different techniques such as a pearl stitch, which I then went onto use in my final sample. Learning to knit was very interesting ad defiantly worth my time. I thought applying this technique worked really well with my theme of a cosy autumn feel.

My initial thoughts and ideas were to create simple fabric manipulations to work well with my busy paper designs. I wanted my fabrics to provide a cosy and warm feel, because of this I avoided a lot of beading and focused on knitting and think yarn with autumn colours. I researched a lot of had knitted quilts and which defiantly influenced my final samples hugely. I decided to develop my weaving samples and keep using simple shapes using lack of illustrative detail because of my papers. I really liked the idea of using circular shapes which were influenced from my illustrative mushrooms from GEOD1.

My final outcomes were very individual and worked well with my personal theme; each displayed a different technique I learnt and practices. However I wish I could have used beading a lot more. Because of this I tried to incorporate my handmade beads to my knitting samples. Although I like my samples I do think I could have done better, maybe focusing more on my final idea and finishing the end piece. They all seem very random and don’t work very well together and not as much as I wanted too with GEOD1 samples. I thought my wallpaper samples from GEOD1 were more successfully. Maybe wallpapers are a stronger aspect to my work.

I have learnt how to French knot, knit, embroidery, weave, quilt and much more. I felt as though I learnt a lot more techniques and methods within the project compared to my first one. These techniques were all interesting and will most defiantly be used in my future projects. Overall I was happy with my project however I defiantly think there is room for improvement. I wasn’t very happy with my final samples as they all seemed rushed and showed a lack of devoted time was to them. However with not having a lot of previous experience with these techniques I produced good work and well-made samples including my pearl knitted sample.

The project brief said I am to find inspiration from across the globe and the traditional methods and techniques used to create textiles. I am also to explore traditional printed patterns from a range of cultures. Using two cultures I will blend them together creating a mixed culture. My initial thoughts at the  time was to research as many different cultures as I can using Pinterest so get an idea of the two cultures I wanted to take further. I found the brief very easy to understand and I was aware of the tasks I needed to complete.

I carried out a lot of research using Pinterest on cultures such as India, Japan and china. I gathered a range of information and facts of their unique religions, landscape, nature, building, language and more. With this research I created a large amount of initial drawings using different mediums such as pen, pencil, pen and collage. I focused mostly on the different variety of animals from japan and nature including the Crane which became my main focus. I researched Japanese fish and the different styles already used to illustrate this beautiful fish. However instead of this I decided to focus on the individual scales which I could them manipulate and experiment further with maybe combining colours from India.

My initial thoughts on this project were to focus my attention on the natural side of japan/china and combine these illustrations with India’s bright and vibrant colours. I seem to always avoid these bright colours and thought maybe i should challenge myself and step abit outside my comfort zone. I developed the theme of birds inspired from Japan/China which became my main theme and worked really well onto my interior fabrics. Even though my first initial thoughts were different to my outcome I am very pleased to my sudden change of ideas lead me. Although I only had one session in the printing room I felt I was defiantly heading in the right direction with the prints I created.

My final outcomes were very disappointing. Due to being unwell during this short project I found myself falling behind and confused about my project and general theme. However towards the end I was very clear on my goals and knew exactly what I wanted to produce. If I had abit more time I believe i would have produced some beautiful paper samples. As well as having little time in the printing room I also missed the opportunity to print off my fabric prints in time with the rest of the class leaving me further behind. As I did not have my digital fabric prints I was unable to experiment with any fabric manipulation which I was looking forward too.  However despite these downfalls I am quite pleased with my general ideas and creativity I showed towards the end. My paper designs looked well and showed more of a plan of what I wanted to create. I also created a variety of dyed fabrics which I created in the printing room; this technique was fun and work very well with my colour palette inspired from India. Although I did not use these fabrics within my final samples I am looking forward to using them again in the future.

Within this project I have learnt how to contrast two very different themes together which I regularly found difficult. Taking different features from them and building a new and unusual culture. I learnt how to dye fabrics, screen printing, stenciling onto screen and improving my Photoshop skills. Overall my final sampling was very weak due to the less time I had in the printing room. Throughout this project I felt less experimental and very limited to my final outcomes compared to my first project which I felt much more confident with.
